I have a suggestion which i think would help give the illusion of a faster
startup, or at least make using Dia just a tiny bit more efficient.
What is the first thing almost every user does after the have opened
Dia?
They open a document,
and for the purposes of my suggestion I will also count opening a new
blank document.
What I am proposing is that at startup Dia should automatically open a
new blank document window.
(unless of a course the user passes in a document at startup)
Why dont I just go to the command line and type
dia mynewfile.dia
???
I could probably do that but I was a click and drool destkop user long
before i was command line user and i think people use the
shortcuts/launchers to start graphical application more often than they
use the command line.
If the user then decides to open a new document (without having made any
modifications to the blank document) it would probably be better and
cleaner to simply reuse the already open window rather than creating a new
one and the user having to close the blank page. This should also make
a preference to disable this proposed feature.
In both Dia and the Gimp i find that consistantly the first thing i need
to create a new document. If this step is going to happen 99% of the time
i think it makes sense to optimize Dia for normal usage.
I should probably mention the words workflow and use case analysis to make
myself sound more intelligent :)
Does anyone else think this idea has merit? If so i will file a bug
report.
Sincerely
Alan Horkan
