For help on UNIX encryption... search on the net for DES (Digital Encryption
Standard) Encryption.
If you think you can decrypt the /etc/passwd file, think again, password
crackers are only able to encrypt and compare the passwds, anyway, if that is
not your plan, then good luck.
Also, try searching for a book on the net called "Maximum Security: A Hackers
Guide to Securing Your Internet Site and Network" I saw some things about
DES, and I think it had a simple explanation of how it is done for /etc/passwd
files.
