dia 0.91 font issue

hi, i just downloaded and compiled dia 0.91 from sources (gcc 2.95.3 glibc 
2.2.5 gtk 2.2.4 glib 2.2.3 pango 1.2.5) and i am experiencing some issues 
with fonts...
1. seems that dia just sees the type1 fonts not others (is that right?)
2. when using the text tool the fonts are extremely small (unreadable i'd say) 
the sans (which is the default) has a default font size of 0.80 and the 
maximum allowed is 10
3. whenever i try to select another font (does not matter which) i get the 
following in console:

** (dia:29634): WARNING **: Couldn't load font "Garamond Italic 12" falling 
back to "Sans Italic 12"

any hints?
