Well, I have to tell you that I use Slackware 8.0 and the source for my Dia pkg is the sources of it. Actually the last stable version, as it is said in the web page. Leo.

(I am just trying to help without knowing how.... So i count my
experiences...)
 I have verified y have no problems with the special characters.

But I remember that while using the Dia wich accompanies Suse
distribution (7.3 no 7.0 as I said before) I was not able to open the
on line help manual: I think some files were missing. Now, after
reinstalling it I can. 

Where did your Dia come from?

I'm sorry: "spanish.Is" shows just another writing error. I should
have  written  "spanish. Is"
