The answer is very application/algorithm dependent. For obvious
reasons, routines with inline asm optimizations using 3DNow! and MMX
(or Katmai.. whatever the buzzword of the day is) instructions will
perform better per clock cycle on one processor than the other.
As I recall, Counterpane has an x86 asm reference implementation of
Twofish (their AES bid) which may benefit from the advanced features of
either processor.
Processor choice can be very subjective, even with a specific
objective (cryptanalysis, say) in mind. I find the AMD K7 more
architecturarly pleasing than the Pentium III. Indeed, several IT/misc tech
magazine reviews are calling the pre-release P III "little improvement over
the old stuff".
Not that you can take my word on any of this, as my system is a
DEC Alpha. In the end, there is no specific processor which is all things
to all men. One may excel at large-matrix operations (e.g. MIPS R10k),
one may be known for good interger performance such as the x86, and
yet another may perform best with floating-point operations (e.g. Alpha).
Considering that both processors will be rated at 500Mhz+, you will likely
be satisfied with either choice.
