WHAT IS DIGITAL BEARER SETTLEMENT?

A digital bearer transaction is one where a cryptographically secure
value-object, issued and underwritten by a third party, is exchanged
between the two parties in a trade, typically over a public
internetwork. The object executes, clears, and settles the transaction
instantaneously, securely, and, in the most secure protocols,
anonymously.

For a much more detailed financial and legal discussion of digital bearer
transaction settlement, and of the market for these kinds of transactions,
please see the Philodox home page, <http://www.philodox.com>.

THE PHILODOX SYMPOSIA ON DIGITAL BEARER SETTLEMENT

Philodox Financial Technology Evangelism, of Boston, Massachusetts, in
association with the Digital Commerce Society of Boston, announces the
second in a series of symposia, conferences and workshops on the
subject of digital bearer transaction settlement.

The First Philodox Symposium on Digital Bearer Settlement was held in late
July of last year, and though small, it was a resounding success, with several
luminaries in the field of electronic commerce and digital bearer transaction
settlement in attendance. For information on the First Symposium, see
<http://www.philodox.com/firstsymposium.html>.

A NEW SYMPOSIUM ON THE TECHNOLOGY OF DIGITAL BEARER SETTLEMENT

The second of these gatherings, a professional symposium examining specific
applications of the technology of digital bearer settlement, will be held
at the Downtown Harvard Club of Boston, Thursday and Friday,
March 25 and 26, 1998. The symposium will be a forum for designers and
developers of digital bearer transaction applications to discuss their
ideas -- and especially their products -- in a friendly, collegial
setting, high above downtown Boston.

FIRST CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

This is the First Call for Presentations for the Symposium.

Anyone who has an idea, design, prototype or product using digital bearer
transaction technology is invited to send an abastract of your proposed talk
to Philodox and reserve a speaking slot in the appropriate section, or
sections, of the Symposium's agenda (seen below), to discuss their work with a
group of interested technical, legal, financial, and marketing professionals.

Selection for inclusion in the Symposium's agenda will be fairly flexible, but
preference will be given, where necessary, to the the originality of the idea,
and then to the stage a given digital bearer technology application is in in
the development cycle, the later in development the better.

SUBMISSIONS

To submit a proposal for your talk, please send a small abstract, of no more
than 250 words, to Robert Hettinga, of Philodox <mailto:rah@philodox.com>. Mr.
Hettinga will forward it on to the appropriate section chairs. You should
receive confirmation of your speaking slot within 5 working days, and probably
sooner. Since speaking slots will be assigned on a rolling basis, it is
probably better to submit a rough idea of your talk to us as soon as possible,
and ammend it later if you need to.

By submitting a proposal, presenters are committing to come to the Symposium
to give their presentation, and will be automatically registered as Symposium
participants. As this is a small, bootstrapped event, no discounts are
available for presenters whose proposals are accepted, per se. However, it is
possible that a limited amount of fee discounts and waivers will be available
contingent on several factors. See the Scholarship section of this Call,
below, for details.

BOOTHS

A limited amount of display space may be available for companies who wish to
put up a small 10 X 10-foot booth. If you're interested in buying boothspace,
please contact Robert Hettinga, <mailto:rah@philodox.com>, directly.

SPONSORSHIPS

It is entirely possible to sponsor this event. :-) This includes the cocktail
party on Thursday night, and sponsorships can be either monitary or in kind.
Please contact Robert Hettinga, <mailto:rah@philodox.com>, directly, for
details.

THE SYMPOSIUM'S FORMAT

Each section of the Symposium will consist of presentations of digital bearer
technology applications, led by an expert moderator. Ample opportunity will be
given for feedback and discussion of the application or idea. And, in the
tradition of the first Philodox Symposium, there will be lots of time at meals
and the symposium's social events for one-on-one discussion.

THE DIGITAL BEARER SETTLEMENT EMAIL LIST: DBS@PHILODOX.COM

As part of Philodox's ongoing support of the technology of digital
bearer settlement, an email list has been established to discuss the
technology and its ramifications in an unmoderated, informal setting.
Please use the following URL in any mailto-capable browser to subscribe to the
list itself: <mailto:requests@philodox.com?subject=subscribe%20dbs>.

It is hoped that the Symposium's participants will use
dbs@philodox.com as a "watering hole" list for their discussions
before, during, and after the Symposium.
