If you want to maximize the benefit to mankind, code up some private
communications infrastructure that is easier to use than not to use, even
for newbies to the internet with marginal computer literacy. Perhaps a mail
client that is really cool and that only communicates in secure mode? Or
better yet, something to intercept email from any mail client locally, then
relay it on encrypted if it knows the public keys of the recipients? Or
what about a Java-based secure communications mechanism that can be used by
any Java-enabled browser?
Secure communication that is easier than PGP to use, not crackable without
access to the victim's computer, and widely used by non-techies would be of
great benefit in that it would make certain computer crimes and privacy
invasions much harder to commit.
