Peter,

I agree that DES is probably dead from a PR perspective.
However the core algorithm was never truly broken,
thus 3DES is still a credible cipher solution (albeit
a slow one). Personally I think DES was already dying
because of its inablility to keep up with network
bandwidth. This same problem will probably kill off
the winning AES cipher well before its prime. DES at
least lived beyond its expiration date, which is an
exceptional achievement for any cipher.
