In general, list management concerns should be brought to the attention of the list manager at <a href="mailto:CodherPlunks-request@toad.com">CodherPlunks-request@toad.com</a>.
If you desperately need to reach the list manager ASAP for some reason, you can send mail to the current manager, Futplex <futplex@pseudonym.com>. Non- urgent mail about list administration sent to this address will be cheerfully ignored.
Subscription Philosophy -----------------------
CodherPlunks is a closed subscription list. This is part of a deliberate attempt to maximize the S/N ratio on the list. The founders have faith that technical people can confine themselves to technical discussions on an explicitly technical mailing list, without the need for traffic moderation by a third party. It is also believed that programmers can do an excellent job of identifying each other. Hence the list is designed to expand as an initial nucleus of subscribers (not chosen scientifically) invites other coders to join.
Note: although the list of subscribers is regulated, the mailing list is not intended to be "secret" in any sense. Messages to the list may be redistributed as freely as with any public mailing list, and the subscription list is public information. Pseudonyms are welcome to subscribe in the usual way. Regrettably there is no current provision for direct anonymous messages to the list; the present list manager will gladly forward any anonymous mail sent to CodherPlunks-request@toad.com that is deemed to be on topic.
How to Subscribe ("I Want In !") --------------------------------
Find a current subscriber who is willing to recommend that you be added to the list. That person should send mail to <a href="mailto:CodherPlunks-request@toad.com">CodherPlunks-request@toad.com</a> giving your email address, and indicating that (s)he wants you added. You should receive mail confirming your subscription.
As a last resort, if no-one on the list knows you, you may attempt (politely !) to convince the list manager to add you anyway.
How to Unsubscribe ("Let Me Out !") -----------------------------------
Send mail to <a href="mailto:majordomo@toad.com">majordomo@toad.com</a> containing the single text line "unsubscribe CodherPlunks". Expect to receive confirmation when the majordomo daemon handles on your request.
Archives --------
Archives of CodherPlunks traffic are kept at <a href="http://www.hks.net">Hell's Kitchen Software</a> by <a href="mailto:cactus@hks.net">Todd Masco</a>. The archives are entirely public; you do not need to be a CodherPlunks subscriber to access them. Todd has kindly offered his time and disk space as a free service to the community, so please be polite if/when you report any difficulties.
Origins -------
The CodherPlunks list was born of frustration at the end of 1995. At that time the Cypherpunks list had become, to a fair extent, a victim of its own success. Cypherpunks was increasingly overwhelmed by FAQs, recriminations, reheated spam, etc. Periodically someone would rue the relative inattention paid to the actual deployment of strong cryptographic measures. Anarchies being as they are, no-one stepped in to dictate the behavior of the list members. Assorted proposals to spawn new lists were floated, but none came to fruition. Finally the frustration expressed by Raph Levien in a November 1995 message to Cypherpunks led to the creation of CodherPlunks.

List Topics -----------
The CodherPlunks list is intended for discussion of implementation of strong, robust cryptosystems. This includes but is certainly not limited to cryptographic libraries, reference implementations of cryptographic algorithms and protocols, user applications incorporating cryptography, etc.
Since the list is simply meant to fill a niche, many topics are generally _inappropriate_ for discussion on CodherPlunks, viz:
-politics (crypto or otherwise) -social commentary -theoretical cryptography, except as it directly relates to implementation issues -vanilla (not crypto specific) programming Q&A -messages forwarded from elsewhere (announcements, essays, etc.) -wild speculation about the possibility of writing a program that does XYZ -personal attacks -anything else not directly involved in implementing cryptography
