For a laptop, one would generally mount the i-button reader on the
*outside* of the case (I've got one velcroed to the front side of mine, with
a shortened able feeding data to the computer). The idea is to be able
to have brief momentary contact, or retained contact, at will. Putting
it *inside* would not work very well.
The form factor of the ring itself depends on which version you have --
some of the wimpy ones are "30", the better ones (including java and crypto)
are called "50". I *believe that defines the ratio in height. The 50s
I have are about 1cm in diameter and 5mm in height, so I assume the 30s
are 3mm in height and 1cm in diameter.
The crypto i-buttons are *not* crippled. I don't know of anyone other
than me who has them, and I've only got 4 (er, a few other fc98 attendees
got them as well). In late 1998-early 1999, a java non-crippled-crypto
ibutton will be available.
They really should publish the design somehow and get Fujitsu to make them
for export :)
