Thats a pity. For the better known block ciphers, it is very fast on
the Penitum pro/Pentium 2 architecture.

ppro 200mhz, linux gcc +asm, cbc mode, 8k blocks

                        bytes/sec
RC4 (for comparison) 22,525,000
RC5 32/12 13,975,000
Blowfish 7,640,000
CAST 128 7,080,000
DES-EDE (for comparison) 1,654,000

Blowfish suffers from the key setup costs when sending small amounts of data
under different keys...... for the fast block ciphers, this only really
leaves CAST for the domain I'm interested in (SSL/TLS). For my April TLS
release, I intend to have non-standard support for DH+block-cipher
since the only strong cipher currently supported for EDH ciphers is
triple DES. As noted above, it is rather slow on a powerfull machine.
Looks like CAST-128 will probably be it, with the option of RC5-32/12 for
non-USA people.

eric (who will be adding more patent violations (if imported into the USA) to
the next release of SSLeay :-)
