As mentioned, yes, and also it doesn't find the bug, it just buries it in updates.

If you're still trying to figure out what calls cause this effect,
here's a thing you could do:  Change the update rect system to actually
have a list of rects rather than combining them, and let each rect have
a color.  Different places that call the ddisplay_add_update* function
should have distinct colors.  Once you see what color(s) is given to the
damaged areas, you can concentrate the colors on those calls,
percolating up the call chain until you find the culprit.
