font randomly gets blocky

I'm using dia v0.91 and I've read
http://www.lysator.liu.se/~alla/dia/fonts.html

However, I've created a simple flowchart with a few
elipses and labels. Normally, the font looks fine
(where fine == nice,clean freetype), but once in a 
while, the labels for objects that aren't being edited
will suddenly go blocky (as if switching to a bitmap
font). Selecting the object (either with the mouse or
with ctrl-a) will cause the font to switch back.

Any idea what is causing this?
