not essential, recently features have been added that use XSLT but it
should not prevent you from building Dia.

if you can provide a patch to make this pattern matching more robust i
expect it would be very much appreciated.

sorry i cannot be more helpful.  be patient and i am sure the developers
will do their best to help you out when they return from their holidays.
