This is really odd. I have to think /usr/lib is indeed searched, or lots
of other stuff would be screaming. Check that you have
/usr/lib/libunicode.so
/usr/lib/libunicode.so.0
if you have
/usr/lib/libunicode.a
try
nm /usr/lib/libunicode.a | grep unicode_init
and see if it finds anything.
