Arrrr, my bad.  I forgot that my Emacs now does UTF-8 by default, so those
were UFT-8 things in a supposed latin-1 diagram.  Once I made them actual
latin-1, they worked.  (Though I updated to libxml1.23 at the same time,
which might or might not have helped.)  I'm guessing something in the mail
transport made it correct Latin-1 on your side, too.
