I know this is not a solution, but a kludgy workaround. I've had to do
this myself on occasion. If you write the special letters somewhere else,
you can copy them and then paste with Edit->Paste Text.
I have no idea how to do non-ascii input[1], much less how to handle it in
a program. For characters typed directly from the keyboard, I think it
should work (any confirmation), but we don't handle multi-key input.

[1] I hacked keystrokes into Emacs, so I've never learned how GTK normally
does.
