Looks to me like you're not finding any fonts.  It is supposed to give a
warning about that, though.  If you compile with --enable-debug as well
(and make sure that lib/font.c is recompiled), we can see exactly what line
it happened in (my guess is 933:).

The X font path (assuming you use XFree86 v. 4) is determined by the
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file (without -4 for previous versions), in the
"Files" section, there should be a number of FontPath entries that are
actual paths to font dirs.  You can also see in the X log file what the
actual font path is (typically /var/log/XFree86.0.log).
